20 Years Ago Today

Twenty years ago today, the Berlin Wall came crashing down, symbolizing the fall of communism in Europe in the late 80s/early 90s. It hit me with some shock to realize that the average college student is too young to remember this important moment in history.

Spiegel posted a fascinating photo gallery of Berlin during the wall and now. The photos are a testament to democracy and capitalism.

One night in second grade, I remember my mom waking me and sitting me down in front of CNN. I had no idea why people were celebrating and hacking at a graffiti-covered wall. I remember my parents celebrating and trying to explain the significance. Now, I’m thankful they wanted me to experience that historical moment.

Still brings a tear to my eye watching the footage of the Berlin Wall coming down…

It’s sad that so many people in the US have forgotten those events, what with our terrible short term memory.
